The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Penguin Classics)

I read this along with "James", the new novel by Percival Everett. Classic Twain. A bit too long and crazy ending.

"He was not the Model Boy of the village. He knew the model boy very well though—and loathed him." Much more fun and light-hearted than Huck's adventure.

What an adventure and what a ride. Floating down the Mississippi on a raft without a care in the world. And yet, being open to new people and places. Sometimes the best part of travel is the unexpected turn, getting lost -- figuratively and literally and most importantly, going with the flow.

If I could give this book negative points, I would. I read it once a long time ago and HATED it. The story was ridiculous and so long drawn out. I hated the dialogue that was so difficult to read. I can’t for the life of me think why people liked this book and deem it a classic. I don’t like the way Jim is portrayed or the frequent use of an offensive word to refer or Black men. Disgusting. I only reread it because I had just finished James and wanted to read the original since there will be a book discussion on these two books. When I learned this was required reading for my daughter when she was in high school, I expressed my dismay to the teacher. I didn’t object because I don’t believe in banning books. If someone wants to read this book, I’m fine with it, but making it required is just plain wrong.
