That's Not My Name

A New York Times and USA Today Bestseller!

She thought she had her life back. She was wrong. A gripping debut thriller perfect for fans of Natalie D. Richards and Vincent Ralph.

It was a mistake to trust him.

Shivering and bruised, a teen wakes up on the side of a dirt road with no memory of how she got there--or who she is. A passing officer takes her to the police station, and not long after, a frantic man arrives. He's been searching for her for hours. He has her school ID, her birth certificate, and even family photos.

He is her father. Her name is Mary. Or so he says.

When Lola slammed the car door and stormed off into the night, Drew thought they just needed some time to cool off. Except Lola disappeared, and the sheriff, his friends, and the whole town are convinced Drew murdered his girlfriend. Forget proving his innocence, he needs to find her before it's too late. The longer Lola is missing, the fewer leads there are to follow...and the more danger they both are in.

This is up there for one of my favorite thrillers. There was a ton of mystery and suspense but it also was fairly fast paced so although I was anticipating what was going to happen, I wasn’t sitting on information too long before it became clear. As a true crime fanatic, I took interest in the plot and loved the amateur sleuthing that Drew, Autumn and Max get into. The dual POVs provide interesting insights into the timeline that really get the head spinning by the second half of the book. I’ve added more Megan Lally to my TBR because I thought this story was told wonderfully so I’m very intrigued to read more of her work soon.

Suspense, funny, sad. Not what I was expecting at the end so it had a good twist.

All I’ll say about That’s Not My Name is that I didn’t realize it was a young adult novel when I picked it up. I went in expecting darker or more graphic elements, but instead got a quick, easy, and lighthearted read than the usual. While it’s not exactly my style, I can’t complain—it does what it’s supposed to as a YA book. If you’re into not so disturbing plot lines, this one will probably hit the mark for you. For me, it was just a little detour from my usual reads.

3.5 based on an interesting premise. The story had a compelling hook, and the themes of identity and mystery were intriguing from the start. However, I found myself disappointed and increasingly frustrated by the way the plot unfolded. It felt unrealistic that high school students were able to crack a major criminal case while the adults—especially law enforcement—focused on the wrong angle (cliche, right?). Overall, it had potential, but the execution stretched the credibility too far for me.
