This was Mean Girls meets The Murdaugh Murders, except this entire thing was fiction, and the murders were very real. This book was filled with unlikeable characters and there was no one to root for by the end.

Ah, high school: the land of perfect grades, perfect selfies, and perfectly buried secrets—until some psycho in a rust bucket decides to ruin everything. Welcome to Brooke’s life, a twisty thriller that feels like the lovechild of Pretty Little Liars and Mean Girls.

description

Brooke is the quintessential overachiever with a picture-perfect life, carefully curated to erase the stain of “the incident.” But when a celebratory night ends with her being stalked on a desolate road by a truck with serious rage issues, Brooke’s tightly controlled world unravels faster than you can say “danger ahead.”

What really makes this book shine, though, is Brooke’s character arc. She starts off as the typical “must be perfect” protagonist, but by the end, she’s faced with a gut-wrenching question: how far would you go to protect your reputation? Her choices are messy, her emotions raw, and it’s hard not to root for her even when you’re screaming, “Girl, what are you doing?!”

The story is a whirlwind of tension, secrets, and “holy crap, did that just happen?” moments. Megan Lally’s writing pulls you in like quicksand. Is the pacing a bit frantic? Sure. I legitimately had to check my pulse at one point. Brooke’s fear is palpable, and as the mystery of who’s behind the wheel (and what they want) unfolds, you’ll find yourself double-checking your locks. She’s flawed, relatable, and just messy enough to keep you hooked.

The twist, while solid, wasn’t as mind-blowing as I’d hoped. I saw part of it coming, but it didn’t detract much from the thrill. Also, the side characters—especially Brooke’s best friend—could’ve used more depth. Still, the relentless pace and sharp writing made this a compulsive read.

This book was super predictable. The FMC was acting so dumb, like really clueless about who was setting her up when it became so obvious. Then the ending was too predictable for me, I wasn't surprised in the least by the FMC or her family. They we're rich and entitled. It was semi entertaining up too the second half. Hence the 3 stars, rounding.

Second novel by Megan Lally and it did not disappoint. Probably classed as YA but it’s a good quick psych thriller. 9/10
