Overall, 4.5 stars!
When I finished this book, I wasn’t sure who was more team Elwen or Gweli than me, Eli’s brother, Logan or Gwen’s dog, Taigi. :-)
I thought this book was fantastic! It had well thought out humor, jokes, intimacy, narrative and strong character dynamics between Gwen and Eli. I enjoyed the way the author introduced the these characters and the way she allows the reader to learn about both Gwen and Eli as individuals as the story progresses, but also the types of people they were involved with before the relationships ended.
Gwen—a bonafide millionaire herself, isn’t the type of person who flaunts her wealth or even sees herself as someone who has money to throw away on expensive clothes—has reservations about Eli based off of her relationship with her ex, Sebastian.
Eli—a self-sacrificing, rich and committed doctor whom has had his entire life planned out since his father passed away when he was eleven took up the role of protector and supporter of his mother and younger brother, Logan—misunderstands Gwen due to the fact that he blindly trusted his ex-fiancé, Hannah at face value.
However, one thing cannot be denied, Gwen and Eli have some of the best chemistry I’ve seen and with their friends and family being involved it kind of felt like I was reading a sitcom. :-)
Likewise, I felt it was refreshing to watch a slow connection and bond form between these two because of their recent break-ups and also because it seemed to make their relationship feel more authentic. I know for a fact that I would not have believed in their story as much as I did if the relationship had been rushed.
More importantly, I don’t think anything was as entertaining as watching these two polar opposites duke it out as frienenemies who become friends. Though seeing Gwen and Eli tear into Sebastian and Hannah is a close second. The author also did a great job of weaving subplots for Gwen and Eli individually into the narrative that were extremely moving and powerful as well, which kept both Gwen and Eli grounded in their own worlds of Art and Medicine.
While I did feel one aspect of the ending was slightly predictable, Gwen and Eli’s relationship and sexual tension throughout the book was not. One minute they were being snarky and the next they were thinking about each other or making out. It was a fantastic book and an easy re-read choice. I am recommending this book to everyone. Go! Go read it now, guys ^__^
