Tell Me What You Did: A Novel

By Carter Wilson

ONE OF THE BEST MYSTEY-THRILLERS OF THE YEAR -- Marie Claire

She gets people to confess their crimes for a living. He knows she's hiding a terrible secret. It's time for the truth to come out...

Poe Webb, host of a popular true crime podcast, invites people to anonymously confess crimes they've committed to her audience. She can't guarantee the police won't come after her "guests," but her show grants simultaneous anonymity and instant fame--a potent combination that's proven difficult to resist. After an episode recording, Poe usually erases both criminal and crime from her mind.

But when a strange and oddly familiar man appears on her show, Poe is forced to take a second look. Not only because he claims to be her mother's murderer from years ago, but because Poe knows something no one else does. Her mother's murderer is dead.

Poe killed him.

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Dead Girl in 2A and The New Neighbor comes a chilling new thriller that forces the question: are murderers always the bad guys?

When Poe Webb was young her mother was brutally murdered, and their family home was set ablaze never bringing her killer to justice. As she got older, Poe decided to move on with her life and try to find happiness.

Now, Poe is the host of a top-rated true crime podcast called, Tell Me What You Did. Guests come on and anonymously and confess the crimes that they have committed. Poe makes no guarantees that the police or the thousands of amateur sleuths listening will not find out who they really are. One of the guests calls in to confess that he is the person that murdered Poe’s mother. He is the true killer or does Poe know something that this confessor has not realized. Does he know that Poe also have a crime that she will never confess.

This was my first Carter Wilson book, and it did not disappoint. It was a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was skeptical since this was almost a whopping 450 page thriller. Trust me when I say that you will get sucked in and breeze through this. The narrative takes off at a relentless pace. Wilson crafts a web of mystery and secrets, making it almost impossible to see what is coming next.

If you're a fan of novels that explore the darkest corners of the human mind while keeping you guessing until the very end, TELL ME WHAT YOU DID is the book for you.

I have so many thoughts about this book! My book club, East Bay Thriller Queens, picked it as our March read, and I was instantly hyped when I saw it was Barnes & Noble's Mystery & Thriller Pick for February. The back cover had me hooked, and the premise? A podcast where people call in to confess their crimes? Absolutely chilling-in the best way. ended up flying through this book way faster than expected. Yes, it's over 400 pages and has exactly 100 chapters (which is wild!), but don't let that scare you off. Carter Wilson's writing is super clean and to the point, which made this an easy, fast-paced read. I've already been recommending this one to anyone who'l listen. It's packed with symbolism, sharp foreshadowing, and a twist that made me sit back and think, how did miss that?! It was right there all along, and that's what loved most-when a thriller makes you question everything in the best way.

Our book club didn’t really enjoy reading Tell Me What You Did. While the premise sounded promising, many of us found the execution underwhelming and the pacing uneven, which made it hard to stay engaged throughout the story. Several readers felt the characters were difficult to connect with, and the emotional stakes didn’t land as strongly as expected for a psychological thriller. The twists also felt more predictable than surprising, which led to a sense of disappointment rather than the suspense we were hoping for. Overall, it wasn’t a hit for our group, and it didn’t spark the same level of discussion or excitement we usually get from a thriller read. 2/10 Meetup Location: Segundo Coffee Lab in Ironworks located in HTX
