Stay True: A Memoir (Vintage Books)

Determined to hold on to all that was left of one of his closest friends—his memories—Hua turned to writing. Stay True is the book he’s been working on ever since. So brilliant and beautiful. This is a memoir about Hsu's friendship with his college friend, Ken. One day, on just another summer night, Ken is senselessly killed in a carjacking. The story is a beautiful memorial to him, their adolescence, and what it is to be known by another person so deeply. It's a story about finding friendships with people who challenge you to stretch beyond those mundane layers of things like music, philosophy, and movies.
I recommend this book if you enjoy:
Stories set in the 90s, music (in general, but grunge and hip hop are referenced a lot and it made me smile), memoirs, Asian American coming-of-age stories, and journeying through the author's self-reflections of their adolescence to find pieces of yourself also tucked somewhere in the pages.
