Stargirl (Stargirl Series)

ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S 100 BEST YA BOOKS OF ALL TIME • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A PARADE BEST KIDS BOOK OF ALL TIME

A modern-day classic from Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli, this beloved celebration of individuality is now an original movie on Disney+!

Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of “Stargirl, Stargirl.” She captures Leo Borlock’ s heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first.

Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal. In this celebration of nonconformity, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity and the thrill and inspiration of first love.

Don’t miss the sequel, Love, Stargirl, as well as The Warden’s Daughter, a novel about another girl who can't help but stand out.

“Spinelli is a poet of the prepubescent. . . . No writer guides his young characters, and his readers, past these pitfalls and challenges and toward their futures with more compassion.” —The New York Times

I wish I read this when I was younger! It is so whimsical and charming. Even when she changes her outside appearance, she cannot help but to burst with her own energy. Her enthusiasm and goofy compliments in the car ride are the best example. The best part, she leaves, he does not get to continue his school relationship. I love a lesson learned the hard way. Oh! Don’t stalk people and respect them when they ask you not to do something. Star girl is indeed a flawed character. I do not feel the author was trying to say these things are good ways to behave. Instead he wanted us to be a bit off put by star girl. Maybe not… but that’s how I viewed it. ⭐️

Stargirl is a charming story about a Manic Pixie Dream Girl that moves to a small town and changes everyone's lives for the better. Kind of. She's basically kind but quite intrusive, and the kids don't know whether to love or hate her. There's some beautiful lines and writing in this book, but I find myself a bit frustrated with the "cute girl changes others" trope and I want Stargirl to have her own story and success. Still, it made me FEEL, and that's a sign of good writing and story. A quick, recommended read.

I did not enjoy this book. I really thought I would but it was really difficult for me to finish. The only reason I finished reading it was because it was assigned in one of my classes.
