"Ingenious and beguiling."
--Time

"Crichton keeps us guessing at every turn in his best work since The Andromeda Strain."
--Los Angeles Times

"Sphere may be Crichton's best novel, but even if it ranked only second or third, it would be a must for suspense fans."
--Miami Herald

A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills. The gripping story of a group of American scientists sent to the ocean floor to investigate an alien ship, only to confront a terrifying discovery that defies imagination, Sphere is Crichton prime--truly masterful fiction from the ingenious mind that brought us Prey, State of Fear, and Jurassic Park.

Not bad, Michael Crichton. But definitely not your best. But that's okay.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable. It's much easier to read than, say, Timeline perhaps, with its complicated theories of parallel universes. However, it was not so easy that it seemed infantile. It was a quick read, but it was full of thrills and unexpected surprises. The characters had the nice depth and range of most Crichton characters, where you get pleasantly invested but I wasn't sobbing when difficulties befell them (which is appropriate for this type of novel).

My only real criticism is that I thought the ending was overly simplistic. I won't go into spoilers, but I really thought that Crichton could have done better, even though it tied in perfectly with the introduction and rising action.

Overall, check it out, especially for vacation. Enjoy!

3.5 - paper-thin characters and sometimes laughable dialogue but fun an action-packed. An easy popcorn read.
