Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery

A USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.

Connecticut, 1666: An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector.

The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil.

To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help.

Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan – one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.

This terrifying tale of bewitchery features more than two dozen of Brom’s haunting full-color paintings and brilliant endpapers, fully immersing readers in this wild and unforgiving world.

This book was incredible! There was a ton of Jungian symbolism throughout the entirety of the book (at least from my perspective) and I really appreciated that. I felt uncomfortable for so much of the book, anytime the Puritans were present.

*mild spoilers*

I appreciated how "the Devil" character/archetype was not all Evil- that he was actually fair and just, and his "evilness" came from a place of revenge and evening the score, so to speak.

I absolutely loved the Carter family, and I really appreciated the last scene with the Reverend.

My favorite parts were Abitha & Samson together, and the visions of the Earth healing, and nature/animals staking their claim in a cruel world.

There is a lot of messaging in this book that I will be contemplating for a long time. It's definitely one of those books that stays with you.

I loved the last scene & that it took place in the 70's, attesting to Abitha's very long (possibly immortal) life. It felt like she got her justice and I was really happy that all the little wild folk were there with the PawPaw tree.

Definitely a good spooky read. Brom's illustrations are excellent. Felt like his version of the origin story of witches and I loved it. My first Brom read so will definitely be reading more.

Perfect autumn read. I really enjoyed the audiobook narration. This story had me rooting for Abitha at every turn.

Well written. It felt a little drawn out but I can now understand why. Not a book I’m typically used to so that may be why I gave a lower rating.
