Slayers of Old

Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Golden Girls in this humorous contemporary standalone fantasy about a group of former Chosen Ones coming out of retirement to save the world one last time
Three former Chosen Ones have joined together to spend their retirement in peace and quiet, running Second Life Books and Gifts in Salem, MA. A calm, peaceful, tourist-filled oasis, where they never have to worry about saving the world. Until some of the locals start summoning ancient creatures best left where they were . . . and they discover that their bookstore basement just may be the portal to the underworld. These ex-heroes may have thought they were done . . . but if they want to finish their retirement in peace, they’ll have to join together to save the world one last time.
Why leave saving the world to the young? Cozy mystery readers looking for an extra dash of magic will eat this story up: fun, funny, and heartwarming, it's a novel about community, second chances, and the healing power of scones.

I did not want this book to end!
When I first heard of this book, I had a feeling it was one I needed to read. You know when you just see something and one part of you says "hmm maybe..." but then another part of you says "There's something about this ... you need to get it and try it." I did that and I'm so happy I did. It feels like forever and a half that I have been searching for a book in the vein of things I love. Do you know what I love? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Do you know what this is? A book that has easter eggs and hat tips to Buffy while throwing Golden Girls humor your way. In other words, it is the second book I have found that delivers upon it's promises.
Slayers of Old follows 3 different points of view all told in 1st person as they are yanked out of retirement to save the world from it's monthly apocalypse:
1) Annette, a retired half-succubus PI in her 60s with a high sense of fashion and a good eye for finances.
2) Jenny, a 56 year old chosen Hunter of Artemis who "retired".
3) Temple, a 99 year old (102 if you count the time he was trapped in a time-loop spell) wizard who's power is tied to his magical sentient house.
All three interact the way you would expect middle-aged friends to act. If you don't know how that is? Go watch Golden Girls and you'll get a pretty good idea of the humor in this story. Which is probably why I loved it so much. There was a sense of nostalgia mixed very well into the modern day. The dialogue itself was very natural and frankly, I enjoyed the fact that other languages were not translated for the reader. Actually, nothing in this book handed anything to the reader and that alone made me fall in love with it.
The world-building was quick, easy, and everytime a specific weapon was mentioned or a non-generic creature from folklore/mythology was brought in I cheered. The realization of being starved for a story like this began to sink in. I'm sure if you asked, I could find something I didn't like about it, but for now .... I absolutely loved it. Even the characters themselves were easy to relate to. Except they can kick ass way better than I can.
Remember kids Grandparents can kick your ass so mind your manners.
Oh, did I mention there's an advanced mouse civilization in the attic? Or that there's a devil who's entire job it is to rage bait? Or that the slander towards ....oh wait I can't say that one. Spoilers. ;D
