The sisters of the Order of Saint Rita captain their living ship into the reaches of space in Lina Rather's debut novella, Sisters of the Vast Black.
A Golden Crown Literary Society Award Finalist
Years ago, Old Earth sent forth sisters and brothers into the vast dark of the prodigal colonies armed only with crucifixes and iron faith. Now, the sisters of the Order of Saint Rita are on an interstellar mission of mercy aboard Our Lady of Impossible Constellations, a living, breathing ship which seems determined to develop a will of its own.
When the order receives a distress call from a newly-formed colony, the sisters discover that the bodies and souls in their care—and that of the galactic diaspora—are in danger. And not from void beyond, but from the nascent Central Governance and the Church itself.

This was such a small good little novella.
I really enjoyed it. I found the live ships very intriguing. I think the writing was really excellent.
Plot wise, I was a little confused on where this novella was going especially since it is fairly short. I thought that the pacing was a little off and looking back we spent a lot of time on characters vs getting to the âaction/plotâ when you did it was towards the end, so it felt off balance.
Character wise: i think they were well written and I liked that we got POVs of all the Nuns.
Where I think the story excels is the world building of the live ships. I was intrigued the entire novella on how they were born and then turned into live ships. I still canât fully explain it, so I wish the author talked way more about that, BUT since it is a novella, there obviously was not time.
I do think this book would have been excellent as a longer read. This is because the world building was really well done and the diseases the Nunâs fought sounded so terrifying, you get a glimpse of it at the end, but you are left wanting more. So in this case this book is one of the ones that would 100% for a tad longer book.
