George MacDonald has a way of writing that always draws me in. His prose puts ideas and feelings that are oddly difficult to express into clear, simple words that I can understand. His narration of Sir Gibbie is simple, beautiful, and witty and I have loved every moment of it. From the charming way that ‘wee sir Gibbie’ interacts with the characters despite his inabilities down to the quiet and thoughtful development of each of the main characters, this work is truly captivating. I definetly recommend this book, particularly if you’ve already read Mac Donald’s writings and have loved them as much as I have. (Note: I read ‘Sir Gibbie’ with the traditional Scott’s Dialect. But if you’re not up for trying to work through old Scottish lingo than the ‘Baronet’s Song’ has much of the text replaced with common English.)
