I originally read this book in the '80s, when I was an 80s teen.
Back then, I could relate a lot to Elsie, especially from when she was an elementary school student in 'Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade.'
Honestly, books like this and 'Sweet Valley High' were big influences on my body image trauma and eating/dieting struggles. There is a lot of fat shaming and diet talk. Elsie had been a chubby child in 'Nothing's Fair.' She lost weight, though and had to keep it off to be considered worth anything. I guess it was the sign of the times? In this book, 17 year old Elsie is pressured by her boyfriend to have sex. He's cute and popular, but pushy. If it weren't for the terrible body image and fat shaming issues in this book it would give an excellent lesson to teenagers to avoid pushy advances by boys.
