Saving Noah

We forigve murderers, not pedophiles.

Not since Lionel Shriver brought us We Need to Talk About Kevin has a writer delved into the complexities of a disturbed mother/son relationship. Until now.

Meet Noah-an A-honor roll student, award-winning swimmer, and small-town star destined for greatness. There weren't any signs that something was wrong until the day he confesses to molesting little girls during swim team practice. He's sentenced to eighteen months in a juvenile sexual rehabilitation center.

His mother, Adrianne, refuses to turn her back on him despite his horrific crimes, but her husband won't allow Noah back into their home. In a series of shocking and shattering revelations, Adrianne is forced to make the hardest decision of her life. Just how far will she go to protect her son?

Saving Noah challenges everything you think you know about teenage sexual offenders. It will keep you up at night long after you've read the last page, questioning beliefs you once thought were true.

Saving Noah is hands down the most powerful Lucinda Berry novel I’ve read this year. It’s a devastatingly tragic and deeply emotional story, yet it’s written with such grace and beauty that you can’t help but be completely absorbed. The anguish of the mother is so raw and palpable that it stays with you long after you close the book. This novel is not for the faint of heart—it’s heartbreaking, shocking, and incredibly heavy, with a jaw-dropping twist that leaves you reeling. Some readers might find themselves crying, others may need to take a break to process the emotional weight. It’s an absolute must-read, but I strongly recommend checking the trigger warnings, as it deals with highly disturbing subject matter, including SA.

This was a roller coaster ride of many different emotions. I couldn't decide how I should feel throughout the book. As a mom it really made me question what I would do and I still don't know what I would do if I was in a similar situation with my child. The twist at the ending blew my mind and I didn't see that at all.

So many emotions. A mother's love for her child, even if he commits a crime. What would you do? Let it tear apart a family? Short but powerful story.

As a parent, you never know the type of child you’ll get when giving birth. You hope for good health and raise them to the best of your ability. You love them without conditions. You do anything to protect them. You teach them right from wrong. You hope they become good humans in society. You never wish to bury them, because a parent should never bury a child. Noah was an A student, a great swimmer, an amazing son, a wonderful big brother, and on a path to being a good human in society. All Noah was came to past when he gave in to his thoughts. His actions turned his and his family’s lives upside down. Society never saw them the same again. Even though Noah couldn’t control his thoughts and tried his best not to act on them, society would never forgive him. Society would demonize him for the rest of his life. There’s always a glimmer of hope for murderers and abusers, but never for ones who harmed children. I felt sorry for Noah as he couldn’t control his actions and I respect his decision. I felt the most sorrow for his mother, Adrianne. She loved her son without conditions and refused to allow society to break her or cause her to demonize Noah. No parent should ever have to go through the things that Adrianne had to face with Noah’s condition. Especially, alone! Her husband was a complete waste of space. He had all the tools to help Noah, but chose not to. He demonized his son instead of loving him. As sick as Noah’s actions were, I can’t completely fault him because he was just a child who tried everything to stop. A child who self reported so he could get some help. A CHILD!!
