I'm not sure why I enjoy these books so much, given that they have no fantasy elements and are not likely to be all that historically accurate (given that the main character works as a spy for the Queen of England in the 1930's, doing things that even today the Queen would not likely ask someone to do). I'm sure part of it has to do with the setting and characters, most of whom are a lot of fun, as well as the stories, which remind me a bit of Laurie R. King's Mary Russell series, but part of it also has to do with the amazing narration of Katherine Kellgren. I'm pretty sure she could make even the phone book sound entertaining!
