Romeo and/or Juliet: A Chooseable-Path Adventure

The New York Times bestseller from the author of How to Invent Everything and To Be or Not To Be

Romeo loves Juliet. Or Rosaline. And Juliet loves Romeo. Or Viola. Or Orlando. It's Shakespeare as you've never played him before.

In this choose-your-own-path version of Romeo and Juliet, you choose where the story goes every time you read! What if Romeo never met Juliet? What if Juliet got really buff instead of moping around the castle all day? What if they teamed up to take over Verona with robot suits? Whatever your adventure, you're guaranteed to find lots of romance, lots of epic fight scenes, and plenty of questionable decision-making by very emotional teens.

All of the endings—there are over a hundred—feature beautiful illustrations by some of the greatest artists working today, including New York Times bestsellers Kate Beaton, ND Stevenson, Randall Munroe, and Jon Klassen.

Packed with exciting choices, fun puzzles, secret surprises, terrible puns, and more than a billion possible storylines, Romeo and/or Juliet offers a new experience every time you read it. You can choose to play as Romeo or Juliet (obviously) but you can also play as both of them, or as Juliet's nurse, or, if you're good, you can even unlock a fourth playable character! That's right. We figured out how to have unlockable characters in books. Choose well, and you may even get to write the world's most awkward choose-your-own sex scene.

If I ever had an idea for a truly epic chooseable-path book, I would send it to Ryan North. Very well written, clearly researched and passionate about the subject matter, and funny (even if you don't fall for fart humor, there is still lots of intelligent humor, just like our boy William's work). It is not, however, a well-rounded piece of writing, nothing really beautiful or meaningful, no message or induced feelings, like I would usually hope for in a book. Top marks for what it is, but only a 6/10 in general. Would (might) buy for coffee table.

This book is hilarious! Like any choose your own path books, there can be a bit of challenge trying to take as many paths as you can without reading the same one twice. But this was great. You could take the traditional path and follow very close to the actual story of Romeo and Juliet, or you could go to any number of places. Some included robots, video games, Romeo becoming a vigilante, Juliet as a body builder, Juliet with a completely different Shakespeare character, and a whole lot more. There's even a secret character to unlock! She is and I quote, "an adult human who is less interested in self-destructive love and more interested in finding sustainable long-term happiness and satisfaction preferably on her own terms. Also, she's a private investigator who's hecka self-narrating."

So if you're looking for a book that has more than one nod to Shakespeare's plays and enjoy the odd morbid joke, this book is totally for you.
