Completely charming ‘year in the life’ of a wealthy girl in the 1890s. Lucinda’s parents have gone to Italy for a year without her and she is left with a couple of spinsters for the year. But Lucinda is so vibrant that she quickly makes friends all over the city. From best cop, to hansom cab driver, to a grocer and a chocolatier, a Princess, a family of actors and more. Somehow they all become part of Lucinda’s world
I was certain that I would be very underwhelmed by this one, but after deciding to power through it, I found myself extremely invested in Lucinda and her antics. Like many other readers I didn’t love the random murder plot? Or the end of Lucinda’s friendship with Tony. I was devastated at the ending because I wanted Lucinda to feel optimistic about her parents return, but she won’t be able to be Tony’s friend any more or to roller skate. I was shocked by how somber the ending was.
