Righteous Prey (A Prey Novel)

Beloved heroes Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are up against a powerful vigilante group with an eye on vengeance in the latest in the beloved series by the #1 New York Times bestselling author.

“We’re going to murder people who need to be murdered.” So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as The Five, shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they’ve killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure.

After The Five strike again in the Twin Cities, Virgil Flowers and Lucas Davenport are sent in to investigate. And they soon have their hands full--the killings are smart and carefully choreographed, and with no apparent direct connection to the victims, the killers are virtually untraceable. But if anyone can destroy this group, it will be the dynamic team of Davenport and Flowers.

I almost forgot I preordered this and the day it was auto downloaded to my Kindle was a joyous celebration!

Technically listed as a Lucas Davenport book, Virgil Flowers is in it for the whole ride. I love love love these two characters together. :)

I didn't read the synopsis, per usual, so I just dove in. The Five are rich jerks who are murdering other rich jerkier jerks and issuing press releases on how they are ridding the world of jerkier jerks than them. When one of the rich jerks, McGruber, does his murder in Lucas and Virgil's backyard, everything they planned pretty much unravels.

Sandford is a touch heavy handed on his feelings on current politics and conspiracy theorists. As well as the availability of guns. I don't disagree but it did feel a tad preachy. Even so, the story kept me from doing work or chores in any timely manner. What I found interesting is how quickly Davenport and Flowers figured things out, so much so that I looked at the page number and realized I wasn't even half through before the first arrest. But man, each time I thought they were wrapping it up, something new happened. The climax was bloody and tense.

I would always highly recommend John Sandford books! (Even Kidd popped up in this one!)
