Rick Riordan Presents: Paola Santiago and the River of Tears-A Paola Santiago Novel Book 1

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents author Tehlor Kay Mejia and her thrilling fantasy adventure based on the Mexican legend of La Llorona (the Crying Woman).

"This fast-paced journey into Latinx folklore, with its clever protagonist, is sure to keep readers turning pages into the night." - Booklist (starred review)

Space-obsessed 12-year-old Paola Santiago and her two best friends, Emma and Dante, know the rule: Stay away from the river. It's all they've heard since a schoolmate of theirs drowned a year ago. Pao is embarrassed to admit that she has been told to stay away for even longer than that, because her mother is constantly warning her about La Llorona, the wailing ghost woman who wanders the banks of the Gila at night, looking for young people to drag into its murky depths.

Hating her mother's humiliating superstitions and knowing that she and her friends would never venture into the water, Pao organizes a meet-up to test out her new telescope near the Gila, since it's the best stargazing spot. But when Emma never arrives and Pao sees a shadowy figure in the reeds, it seems like maybe her mom was right. . . .

Pao has always relied on hard science to make sense of the world, but to find her friend she will have to enter the world of her nightmares, which includes unnatural mist, mind-bending monsters, and relentless spirits controlled by a terrifying force that defies both logic and legend.

Endorsed by Rick Riordan, author of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, soon to be a series on Disney+.

I've finally read this book! I am really excited to read this book so I chose this book for this month. I think I added this book last year cause I think I like adventure books. This book sounds like the Percy Jackson series with also adventure and mythology types. Or maybe those 2 books are similar because they're both Rick Riordan books. At first, I didn't like some of the chapters of the book and I thought that I should give up reading this one but lately, I've tried to give it another try.

And it's getting exciting and more adventurous now. It reminds me of Percy Jackson and speaking of that, I missed Percy Jackson books! So I'm going to continue reading it more and delve into new adventures! When I first heard of this book, It actually caught my attention like the description and the cover of the book. And I just actually added it to my TBR list.

The main character/s of this book are Paola, Emma, and Dante. Those trios were best friends. They were actually best friends because they went everywhere and hung out wherever they went. Then there's this Gila river that has a legend story of it. La Llorona, the wailing ghost woman who wanders the banks of the Gila at night, looking for young people to drag into its murky depths. Then one day, their friend went missing.

I actually liked the story and the plot. It caught my interest and also it's a Fast-paced type of book. So there's a lot of interesting adventures and actions. It was a nice book for readers who like middle-grade books with mystery, action-packed, and adventure. It was also like Sherlock Holmes books with mystery and clues. There's a little bit romance scene and I kinda like it. I mean there are some parts of the story that the two characters are getting close to each other. So, I gave this book 4 stars!⭐⭐⭐⭐

Although the story is interesting and full of adventures, this story has long chapters maybe 6 or 7 pages in 1 chapter and it got me tired of reading. But it was good though because it tells the details very well so it's not really confusing. This book sounds like Percy Jackson's series, Sherlock Holmes, Murder is a Bad Manner, and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. I hope you enjoy reading this guys and I would love to recommend it to you:>

It feels a little slow at times, but it's possible that was intentional, since it was depicting a sequence that would feel slow to the protagonist. This one is unusual in that the conspicuous, super-special hero isn't the protagonist. I get the feeling the Southwest folklore had to be stretched to create a fantasy world: even the characters seem to acknowledge the oddity that a hand monster should exist in huge numbers when its folktale of origin suggests it was the only one of its kind. Nonetheless, it had all the elements needed for an enjoyable fantasy novel.

I read this during a near-blackout at my house for a few hours late into the book, and boy, was that spooky.
