Revolutionary Suicide: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

The searing, visionary memoir of founding Black Panther Huey P. Newton, in a dazzling graphic package

Tracing the birth of a revolutionary, Huey P. Newton's famous and oft-quoted autobiography is as much a manifesto as a portrait of the inner circle of America's Black Panther Party. From Newton's impoverished childhood on the streets of Oakland to his adolescence and struggles with the system, from his role in the Black Panthers to his solitary confinement in the Alameda County Jail, Revolutionary Suicide is unrepentant and thought-provoking in its portrayal of inspired radicalism.

This was a great read. I actually read the Penguin Classics Delux edition, which includes an Introduction by his wife. I actually went back and read it again after finishing the book, since she touches on things that occurred after this book was written.

You actually get to learn a lot about Huey from his childhood, young adult days, starting the Black Panther party to his horrible days in solitary confinement.

It was hard to read about how things turned out years after the book was written. With the Party falling, Huey turning to Drugs, and soon after, his life being taken for no reason at all, it seems to me, other than someone wanting " street cred". But in all, I loved reading about what mindset Huey was in right before he and Bobby Seal were able to start the Black Panther Party and the hardships that came along with it, but also at the same time, reaching people as far as China, with the purpose and strength of their movement.
