A "joyously, riotously queer" (Kirkus) young adult fantasy from debut author Ryan La Sala, Reverie is a wildly imaginative story about dreams becoming reality, perfect for fans of Adam Silvera and Laini Taylor.

A few weeks ago, Kane Montgomery was in an accident that robbed him of his memory. The only thing he knows for certain is that the police found him half-dead in the river. The world as he knows it feels different--reality seems different. And when strange things start happening around him, Kane isn't sure where to turn.

And then three of his classmates show up, claiming to be his friends and the only people who can tell him what's truly going on. Kane doesn't know what to believe or who he can trust. But as he and the others are dragged into increasingly fantastical dream worlds drawn from imagination, it becomes clear that there is dark magic at work. Nothing in Kane's life is an accident, and only he can keep the world itself from unraveling.

Reverie is an intricate and compelling LGBT young adult book about the secret worlds we hide within ourselves and what happens when they become real.

I selected this book based on the title, the story, and the inclusion of LGBTQ(IA+) characters. I was also really excited to find this book available to read through my local library as a "Big Library Read" where the book was promoted for a world book club so that anyone that wanted to read and have a discussion about it, could download the book and read together with someone else they may not have had the chance to speak with. I enjoyed the book and the experience!

Reverie is a beautiful book written with the thought of, "Some Dreams Chase you Back", which I thought was intriguing from the beginning. It centers around Kane Montgomery who finds himself in a bit of trouble when he comes to after an accident involving a local mill that the community treasures and a car accident where he totaled his father's car. Most of the city is calling him reckless and negligent and possibly even doing this on purpose, however, Kane cannot remember what led to that accident. As the story unfolds, Kane finds out that there is much more to the world than meets the eye after he overhears his friends discussing the incident and how they can proceed with Kane. See, the thing is, these three friends that he isn't quite sure about are people he used to lead within these amazing worlds that appear out of thin air such as a home turning into a garden party in the early Victorian era or meeting people he has never met before, that has such an air about them he feels he has to believe them in order to piece everything together.

I found delight within the characters and really loved the personalities that Ryan La Sala was able to create and breathe life into. Kane's sarcasm made me laugh several times and Ursula had to be my favorite. She was a red-headed spitfire that was ready to take on the world and her powers culminated exactly from those qualities. It was also refreshing to read a book that was inclusive of LGBTQ(IA+) themes, starting with Kane as an openly gay teenager, Ursula who speaks to being a lesbian, and other characters throughout the book being true to themselves and being honest with others.

The fantasy that was created with the reveries (stories) was also very interesting and was well-positioned to tell other characters' stories within the book. It was a great read!

I wanted this book to be better than it was. I think I like fantasy and I like gay romance books. I’m not really sure right now how much I like the two together. This book was a little confusing and a little frustrating because i felt like there was a difficult balance between plot and characters that left both aspects feeling just barely developed.
