Reflection: A Twisted Tale

The 4th installment in the New York Times best-selling A TWISTED TALE series asks: What if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld?

When Captain Shang is mortally wounded by Shan Yu in battle, Mulan must travel to the Underworld, Diyu, in order to save him from certain death. But King Yama, the ruler of Diyu, is not willing to give Shang up easily. With the help of Shang's great lion guardian ShiShi, Mulan must traverse Diyu to find Shang's spirit, face harrowing obstacles, and leave by sunrise--or become King Yama's prisoner forever. Moreover, Mulan is still disguised as the soldier called Ping, wrestling with the decision to reveal her true identity to her closest friend.

Will Mulan be able to save Shang before it's too late? Will he ever be able to trust her again? Or will she lose him--and be lost in the Underworld--forever?

I’m reading this series in order, and for the first time, and I can say that so far this is the best one. While it stays true to the original characters, it also finds a way to spin the story and not lose them in the process. (Which was an issue I had with Once Upon A Dream and a tiny bit with As Old As Time). This book was a true adventure from beginning to end. One thing I noticed with the first three books is that they felt like this darkness that wouldn’t stop. Obviously, I don’t mind a darker tale. We literally went to the Underworld in this book and fought demons! However, it still had that Disney feel of, “Things will be okay. Happily ever after is still there, but we have to find it in a new way.” The first two books felt like this gloomy cloud regardless of the optimism. (As Old As Time was different but it didn’t have the same feeling as this one). This book made me want to learn more about Chinese mythology! Sometimes, after I read, I’d be Googling certain things to know more! I believe a good book makes you interested in its topics. Wanting to know more or how it got there is a good sign that it caught your eye. If you’re curious to read any book out of this series, this one should be number one on the list. (Unless you’re like me and want to read them in the order that they’ve come out). Next up is Part of Your World, and I can only hope it exceeds this one. I just cross my fingers that these books get better and better as you go.
