From a Tik-Tok recommendation, I found myself reading Radiance by Grace Draven. This is the first book in the Wraith Kings series. It follows human Ildiko and prince of the Kai, Brishen, the day of their arranged marriage. While it starts out solely as a treaty romance, they slowly learn just how compatible their different races are. If you are looking for a quick, romantic read that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, I highly recommend this story. This is by far one of my favorite comfort reads all year.
What I loved:
🐺 The charming meet cute between Ildiko and Brishen in the garden prior to their wedding. I loved the way that they were brutally honest with how much they thought the other was homely, terrifying, and repulsive. While anyone else would have been offended, it only made their friendship and then romance stronger
🐴 The overall vibe of the story. It was an adorable romance between these two characters with minimal conflict throughout the entire story. The writing and theme remind me a lot of Elise Kova’s style of writing and it was a much needed palate cleanser after the darker themed books that I have been reading lately
🐺 Favorite quote: “Had you crawled out from under my bed when I was a child, I would have bludgeoned you to death with my father’s mace.”
What I wasn’t as much a fan of:
🐴 The epilogue. Until the epilogue, the entire story was just a nice relaxing comfort read. That epilogue was terrifying and gave me about as much anxiety as the nightwalkers in Game of Thrones did. While it did set up the main conflict in the sequel, I was perfectly content with this being a one-shot cozy romance
