A gorgeous original graphic novel from the best-selling creators of KILL OR BE KILLED, MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES, and CRIMINAL.

Max Winters, a pulp writer in 1930s New York, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at 5 cents a word - tales of a wild west outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun. But will Max be able to do the same, when pursued by bank robbers, Nazi spies, and enemies from his past?

One part thriller, one part meditation on a life of violence, PULP is unlike anything the award-winning team of BRUBAKER and PHILLIPS have ever done. A celebration of pulp fiction, set in a world on the brink. And another must-have hardback from one of comics most-acclaimed teams.

This went in a different direction from where I expected it to go. Both in style and in the opening content, it looks like a traditional pulpy western. But once the story picks up, it becomes more reminiscent of a Tarantino movie. I'm not overly fond of the art style—I think there's a reason it went out of vogue—but it definitely puts the reader in a time and place. It feels authentic to the style of those times, and it made me recall reading ancient comic books from my grandmother's attic with yellowed pages and three-toned coloring. The only difference is the quality of the paper this is printed on, which is decidedly modern. I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. I do like the occasional western, and the color palette of this and the grizzled protagonist reminded me of the Dollars trilogy (those Eastwood-starring spaghetti westerns), but I wouldn't call myself a fan or go out of my way to read one. So I was genuinely surprised when the story hooked me. I almost never looked at the artwork, the words were what pulled me in. The artwork was almost like set dressing created to put me in a certain mindset, as I didn't find they added to the story as directly as most comic panels do. An interesting and compelling quick read and well worth my time.
