“An epic story of redemption, discovery and cool speculative sci-fi.”—USA Today

“If you loved The Martian, you’ll go crazy for Weir’s latest.”—The Washington Post

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
478 pages

What’s it about?
When Ryland Grace wakes up to find himself in a small bunk with tubes attached to his body he is confused. He soon realizes that the two people in the bunks next to him are dead. He can’t remember who he is or why he is there, but he is definitely on a rocket ship hurtling through space. It slowly dawns on him that he is on a mission to save humanity and he is all alone. Now, if he can just remember what the mission entails…

What did it make me think about?
Science, space, and what’s out there?

Should I read it?
Andy Weir is such a unique talent. He takes complicated science and sprinkles it throughout his stories to make a novel that challenges and entertains. He is certainly making new science fiction fans everywhere. Anyone who enjoyed “The Martian” will love “Project Hail Mary”.

Quote-
“ I glanced at the pile of papers on a desk. The scientific community had moved into overdrive in a very unscientific way. Gone were the days of careful peer review and published articles. Astrophage research was a free-for-all where researchers posted their findings immediately and without proof. It lead to misunderstandings and mistakes, but we just didn’t have time to do things the right way.“

What a fun, clever, and unique book! The ideas about what we may not yet know about science are very well done. It’s light- yet deep, and it should be dark but it’s not because of the humor, personality, and interesting subject matter. I never would have picked this book and I’m very glad that someone else did for me. A truly entertaining read!!! Spoilers: I particularly liked the surprise twist at the end when the reader discovered that Grace was forced aboard and wasn’t brave at all, however his opportunity to be brave rises again and he takes it. The friendship between Grace and Rocky is so heartwarming.

Really enjoyed this book! Andy Weir does a great job explaining the science elements of the story, which makes it very approachable for those who do not know all the science-y lingo. With my background in biology, it was fun trying to guess what specific outcomes of the story would be. (I was even able to predict a few things!) The Author really puts the 'science' in science fiction. Weir has presented something that feels like a plausible story of our world as we know it facing an insurmountable, and potentially world-ending challenge which results in us making contact with an alien species! I would def recommend this book if you like space travel, biology, or a good laugh. Overall, this book was a fantastic read and want to see the new movie!

Yes I gave it a 10!! I loved this book!! I'm a geek but to be honest this was my first sifi book in a very long time. I thought the science to story ratio was perfect! I loved Rocky and Grace's relationship. From learning each other's language both "spoken" and body as well as becoming friends it was all just chef's kiss! The science was pretty cool also. I didn't see that ending coming and glad it was an HEA. I had my doubts for a while there.
