Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors: A Novel (The Rajes Series, 1)

Award-winning author Sonali Dev launches a new series about the Rajes, an immigrant Indian family descended from royalty, who have built their lives in San Francisco...

It is a truth universally acknowledged that only in an overachieving Indian American family can a genius daughter be considered a black sheep.

Dr. Trisha Raje is San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon. But that’s not enough for the Rajes, her influential immigrant family who’s achieved power by making its own non-negotiable rules:

·       Never trust an outsider

·       Never do anything to jeopardize your brother’s political aspirations

·       And never, ever, defy your family

Trisha is guilty of breaking all three rules. But now she has a chance to redeem herself. So long as she doesn’t repeat old mistakes.

Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before, people who judge him by his rough beginnings and place pedigree above character. He needs the lucrative job the Rajes offer, but he values his pride too much to indulge Trisha’s arrogance. And then he discovers that she’s the only surgeon who can save his sister’s life.

As the two clash, their assumptions crumble like the spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts. But before a future can be savored there’s a past to be reckoned with...

A family trying to build home in a new land.

A man who has never felt at home anywhere.

And a choice to be made between the two.

This was fine and an interesting retelling of Pride and Prejudice. But the beginning was really slow and it felt like the book finally started going after around 130 pages. I also think that the reason that Pride and Prejudice works is that we only see one person's point of view. We see everything from Elizabeth's point of view and so we don't see how Darcy feels or views his own actions - everything is colored by Elizabeth and Darcy's first interactions. But in this retelling, it's dual PoV and I feel like that really changes the book and makes it more frustrating for the reader. We see both of their actions and, at least for me, get increasingly frustrated that no real communication is happening.

Like I said, it was a fine read but not my favorite retelling.

stayed up till four am reading this book because i couldn’t put it down, but the ending,,, it was kind of disappointing. After so much build up i was really expecting the characters to have a better moment, idk it just felt so weird and rushed. Both the main characters were so great and their dynamic was interesting too, love the beginning and middle, but the end left me very unsatisfied :c

A strong family bond that ties traditional culture with assimilating to the new country. One incident, one mistake and you are suddenly the outcast, the black sheep if you will. But what if what you were accused of, wasn’t your fault - or was it? Can silence be an accessory to the crime?

Here we meet the Raje family with HRH as the monarch. Trisha Raje is a brilliant neurosurgeon who is highly revered but when it comes to her own family, that’s a different tune. When she was 17, she made the worst mistake, ever. She picked a friend over her family.

Just when her purgatory might be thawing, DJ Caine, a friend of Ashna, has been asked to cater the party for Trisha’s brother, Yash, a primary candidate in California’s gubernatorial race. DJ Caine also happens to be Emma Caine’s brother. She is Trisha’s patient who suffers from cancer which will leave her blind. Will DJ Caine be the catalyst that will blow her beautiful family reconciliation?

I love this modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice but to be fair, if you read it and expect it to be an Indian version of Pride and Prejudice, you will find yourself quite disappointed. However, if you read it as a book that has a shade of influences from the classic, you will find yourself pulled in by this book and loving every minute of it.

I love the closeness of this family and how there is love and unity throughout the novel. This delightful rom-com is definitely a fun read and the character development develops slowly but quite nicely. My favorite scenes are with Julia Wickham. Hear me out, while she is the villain, she does it with such ease and vengeance. She brings out the fire within everyone. With pain comes strength.

This may surprise some but I actually did not enjoy Trisha, the protagonist. I found her self-righteous, judgmental, and unaware. The enemies turned lovers was a bit too cliche for me but I gave it a great rating because of Emma, Julia, and Darcy’s interactions with each other.
