From #1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell comes Postmortem, the groundbreaking thriller that introduced Dr. Kay Scarpetta and redefined the crime genre.
A killer is stalking the streets of Richmond, Virginia. When the bodies begin to mount, Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta is pulled into a chilling investigation that blends high-stakes forensics with psychological warfare. Armed with cutting-edge science and unflinching resolve, Scarpetta must navigate hostile forces both inside and outside the investigation—because someone isn’t just trying to hide the truth. They’re trying to kill her.
Cornwell’s gift for combining expert-level criminology with bone-chilling suspense makes this book a true modern classic. Relentlessly paced and shockingly prescient, Postmortem is the electrifying first chapter in the Scarpetta series—still as razor-sharp and relevant as ever.

Not at all a new age read but I was convinced to start the Scarpetta series after hearing Patricia Cornwell interviewed on Morbid. I loved hearing about her and her books sounded so intriguing I placed a hold on Libby immediately. Needless to say, I am completely hooked. This felt like a crime show I would watch and I was completely hooked trying to solve the crimes right alongside Kay. The way the story is told is a bit of an interesting perspective and there is a lot of detail which at times felt excessive but I actually really enjoyed the realistic aspects of the plot. In the interview I listened to, I know Cornwell had personal experience researching a medical examiner to be able to write this series so I can trust the accuracy of the information to make this realistic and I truly appreciate that. Knowing this is an ongoing series I’m excited to continue reading and see how those elements change over time!
First book I read from this Author and even though I read it years ago I still remember the story vividly because of how unique the style and story was, the fact that it actually focuses on the investigation rather than a character that is just performing an investigation really helps with immersing you into the story.
Amazingly realistic investigative thought processes from the characters, realistic diagloge with no fluff; no forced romance and no pointless drama to pad out the story. Just investigating, discussions, dead ends, unusual discoveries, and how one piece of key evidence can unravel the whole mystery. Got me absolutely hooked on her as an author, and years later, I still rave and recommend her to anyone who is a murder mystery buff or who likes to watch/listen to true crime investigations.
