Though, I was mad at Chase for making the selfish decision to leave Annie once he learned of the truth of his sister's terminal illness. Once Annie learns the truth behind Chase's abandonment, she refuses to give up on finding a surgeon who might save his the pieces left of his future. Hartmann handles those moments with care and enough restraint to keep them sincere rather than melodramatic. The band dynamics add warmth and energy to the heavier material. Their loyalty to each other gives the novel a plot beyond the romance itself. The performances, songwriting, and chemistry between the. band members create the feeling of a found family that rallies together. The intimacy between Chase and Annie balances sweetness with heat. Readers expecting extremely graphic spice may want more detail than Hartmann delivers here. The spicy scenes focus more on connection than explicit descriptions. Pieces of the Night is a romance that aches before it heals. Jennifer Hartmann understands how to write broken characters without stripping them of hope. Chase and Annie earn every piece of their happy ending.
