This book reads like an epic fable from old. Right away you're snatched up into the fairy tale, albeit one of Grimms' fairy tales. The worst of it is that sometimes Suskind's penchant for turning a sentence laiden with "poetic prose" into a paragraph gets a bit old. Your mind wants to skim through these draggy parts so as to get back to the good stuff. But it is well worth pushing through this occasional mire. I'd even recommend watching the movie afterwards.
