Oreo is a lost minor classic, published by Fran Ross in 1974 in the heydey of the Black Arts Movement.
Oreo, the main character, is a half-black half-Jewish character and the novel blends both Yiddish and black vernacular well and hilariously.
Oreo goes on an adventure through New York to find her long lost father, and whether she's cleverly improvising on the street, or beating up a pimp and hilariously defeating his slave pony with an experimental rubber hymen (no I'm not kidding) the prose sings and it's simply a joy to read.
Add it to you reading list today. It has a very Italo Calvino by way of the American experience going on for it.
