One Step Too Far: A Novel (A Frankie Elkin Novel)

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a chilling thriller about a young man gone missing in the wilderness of Wyoming . . . and the secrets uncovered by the desperate effort to find him

Timothy O'Day knew the woods. Yet when he disappeared on the first night of a bachelor party camping trip with his best friends in the world, he didn't leave a trace. What he did leave behind were two heartbroken parents, a crew of guilt-ridden groomsmen, and a pile of clues that don't add up.

Frankie Elkin doesn't know the woods, but she knows how to find people. So when she reads that Timothy's father is organizing one last search, she heads to Wyoming. Despite the rescue team's reluctance, she joins them. But as they hike into the mountains, it becomes clear that there's something dangerous at work in the woods . . . or someone who is willing to do anything to stop them from going any farther.

Running out of time and up against the worst man and nature have to offer, Frankie and the search party will discover what evil awaits those who go one step too far . . .

This was my first Lisa Gardner series that I have read and I just want to thank Netgalley for the free arc in exchange for a review, but also thank you NetGalley for introducing me to her writing and this awesome series!!!!! (Will be checking out her other books as well!!!)

We follow Frankie as she leave Boston to go Wyoming in search for Tim, a bachelor, who had disappeared 5 years ago. We take a trip with Frankie, Martin (Tim’s father), Nemeth, Bob, and Tim’s groomsmen as they go on one last adventure to try and find Tim’s body. But what they find is something much more sinister and something that no one was expecting at all!!!

I was approved for this book but found out that this was actually the second book, so I seek out the first book and I was already very impressed. But this book absolutely blew me away!! I was a little skeptical with Frankie and the group when they first started, but as they ventured together, I grew to love them each as individuals and them as a group.

Frankie, i knew she was going to be amazing! There was a moment where I was unsure, but Frankie pulled through and proved me wrong!!
Martin, a grieving father and husband, who just wants to find his son leads this one last expedition into the woods.
The groomsmen?? They all stole my heart at the end, and I only wished them all the happiness they deserved! <3
My favorite character has to be Daisy tho!!! All dog lovers are going to enjoy her!!!

I enjoyed everything about this book, from the beginning to the epilogue (yes, it has an epilogue!!) This book had me on the edge of my seat, gave me sleepless nights, and had me thinking about it even while i was working, and I cant believe it’s over already!! (This was one of the books where i wanted it to end because I need to know what happened/to get out of the woods, but for it to not end because I just loved them so much!!) i cannot wait for Frankie’s next adventure.

I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley. It was my pleasure to read and review this story that comes out Jan 2022!!!

This book really surprised me! I really enjoyed this read and found that I couldn't put it down! It kept me guessing 3/4 of the way [although I did have my suspicions...]. The way it was written and the narration from the protagonist really worked well for this story. I also love that the author makes references to the people gone missing in the wilderness and how underrepresented they are and how little data there is regarding their disappearances. I don't want to give too much away, but I highly recommend this book!!!

Honestly, this book sounded like a bad joke at the beginning. However, the more I got into it, the more interesting it got. The story starts with a guy named Tim and his friends who were on a last hurrah before his wedding. One day, Scott and he disappeared. Nobody expected what happened next. Scott comes back, but Tim does not. Can you see why I think it was a bad joke? Five years later and Tim is still not found. Enter Frankie, who is still running from ghosts and live people alike. When Frankie enters the search for Tim, things start happening, and it is up to Frankie and friends to figure out what happened from there. Secrets come out and the fun continues, but this time they are running against the clock and a killer. I will admit this book did not endear me to the idea of hiking in the wilderness, especially with people I do not know. I like the fact that Frankie trusts her instincts, but at the same time I was leery that she would get hurt. I understood her reasoning for taking this case, however, part of me felt like there could have been more. That does not mean I would not recommend this book to other readers because Frankie is an interesting and relatable character. She just wants to do what is right by those who may not have someone or have been forgotten. The book still kept me reading due to the fast pace and short chapters. I honestly believe that this book was meant to disorient the readers, so we did not understand the motive, or know who the villain was until the end. I had mixed feelings about the ending because it made no sense. I believe that was the point though not only to be lost in the wilderness with the characters, but to feel suspicious of every character that entered the picture to prove you can trust no one. However, I also believe in each case Frankie works she leaves a part of herself in that place and takes the spirit of those she meets with her. It is a beautiful idea and I look forward to seeing where Frankie heads next. Frankie helps me believe we are not defined by what we’ve done or haven’t done, but that we can change our future and find ourselves and work toward happiness along the way.
