Emma and Dex are best of friends, although I don't know how. She's secretly in love with him and he's well... in love with himself and later in the years, Slyvie and then he hits rock bottom. While he realizes he does love Em, it's almost like he's a child at a candy store and he wants more than just one type of candy. He wants the entire store.
Slyvia is the first real adult relationship where he is in love with the other person more then himself. As always, he puts himself or however is the flavor first and Em, dead last. He takes her for granted...thinking she will always be there for him. He counts on her to be his rock and not really the other way around. Have to say, he does try but he just can't get it right.
Slyvia nad he get married..shot gun wedding. They bicker, he babysits his daughter for a night when she is suppose to go out with the girls for a girls night out. Turns out, she's sleeping with his boss (who happens to be his former classmate - "best mate" although we never really got that feeling from either side). Slyvia divorces Dex for a better and more exciting lifestyle with Cullim. Dex is devistated and head straight to ....drum roll please, EMMA! (Round of applause, if you will!)
Turns out she slept with Dex the night Slyvia tells him she wants a divorce. After Em and Dex do it, Em flies off to Paris. Dex later takes the train to see her just to talk about that night. She informs him, she's seeing a handsome man name Jean Pierre. It's too late for Dex.
She allows him to stay at her place in Paris and she then calls JP up and tells him she has tonsillitaes and she can"t see him. She and Dex talk and really tells him, "you better not break my heart!" They fall in love and are happy.
They get married and they all love Jasimine (Dex and Slyvia's daughter) and she loves Emma. Only now, Em wants her own child. They try but they are having problems getting pregnant. She wants to move to a new home so Dex finds a nice place for them to check out. He texts her the address and tells her to meet him there since he's at his cafe and she goes to swimming and will bike to the address. She calls him to say she's running late due to swimming and proceeds to bike there, in the heavy rain. Yup, you guess it, a careless driver hits her and she dies.
Doesn't end there. Dex is devastated and goes on a downward spiral. Ian mails him a letter to express, while Em and he dated, he hated Dex because Ian knew, Em truly and always loved Dex and not Ian. He could never make her light up the way Dex could. He tells Dex, "life gets on and you need to move on and live." Slvia who married his old boss are now bitterly divorced from Culluim but found a friendship with Dex. They no longer hate each other. She helps him when he gets blasted AGAIN from alcohol and him to his dad's to get proper bath and sober up. It is from Dex's dad that he learns, like his father who lost Dex's mother to cancer, "you need to live your life as if she's still in your life."
Dex picks up his shattered life and finds companionship with his cafe manager, Maddie. While he finds comfort with her, she is 10 years his jr. and she too has had quite a life of sorrow so it suits them both. They care for each other but they are companions, mentally and physically. Dex takes Jasmine and Maddie to the place where he and Em first met and to the special hill they climbed where they engraved their names. It is there where he finds some peace when he thinks about her.
As I just typed this, my eyes are watering up again. The book is not a romantic comedy. It is a romantic drama. It's not a When Harry Met Sally. It's a book about two people who belong together and how it took them an era to finally get there, only to have it be striped away. I think I cried mainly because I know, if I die, my husband would fall to pieces. I would do the very same for him.
Enough water works! Next book! :(

really just a beautiful, well-written book with a cool concept… lost a point bc the plot was cheesy as hell hahaha but i like it
How do you describe a book that feels so real and so haunting of our own lives? Honestly this book surprised me in a very good way. Its made me reflect about my own "Dexter" and how sometimes life throws your a curve ball and how you swing determines everything. I recommend this to anyone who's wanting a good hopeless romantic type book with a last effect.
