Not in Love

An Indie Next and a Hall of Fame LibraryReads Pick!

A forbidden, secret affair proves that all’s fair in love and science—from New York Times bestselling author Ali Hazelwood.

Rue Siebert might not have it all, but she has enough: a few friends she can always count on, the financial stability she yearned for as a kid, and a successful career as a biotech engineer at Kline, one of the most promising start-ups in the field of food science. Her world is stable, pleasant, and hard-fought. Until a hostile takeover and its offensively attractive front man threatens to bring it all crumbling down.

Eli Killgore and his business partners want Kline, period. Eli has his own reasons for pushing this deal through—and he’s a man who gets what he wants. With one burning exception: Rue. The woman he can’t stop thinking about. The woman who's off-limits to him.

Torn between loyalty and an undeniable attraction, Rue and Eli throw caution out the lab and the boardroom windows. Their affair is secret, no-strings-attached, and has a built-in deadline: the day one of their companies will prevail. But the heart is risky business—one that plays for keeps.

I was hesitant going into this one because of the mixed reviews, but I ended up loving it. Ali Hazelwood delivers a compelling story with flawed, messy characters who find their way to each other despite their imperfections. I love seeing characters embrace each other’s shortcomings and grow together, and this book delivered exactly that. A heartfelt, engaging read that proves love isn’t about perfection—it’s about acceptance.

I have always been an Ali Hazelwood fan, so this book was immediately added to my list when I heard it was going to be released, and boy did it not disappoint!

I will say, that this book may not be for everyone. It has a lot of traumatic experiences for the characters which has a lot to do with some of their decisions. I personally liked that it was clear why these characters were the way they were. It made them feel very real, which Hazelwood has done with many of her characters.

This book was different than her other ones. So prepare for that. I loved it! It showed her versatility in writing, and also how well characters can be made to feel so real. I probably will read this book again soon. I loved the spice levels, I loved the banter, and I loved both main characters. I even loved majority of the side characters.

What truly was the big hit for me, was how real the situation that takes place felt. There is a lot of manipulation in academia, research, and STEM. I feel like Hazelwood showed us that. She's done it in other books before but this one, felt different.

Overall, would HIGHLY recommend!

2.7 This hurt. I love Ali but this wasn't my favorite. I just didn't connect to anyone in the story except maybe Eli. The storyline of the company and the loans was interesting, but I couldn't deeply invest in it. I think I kept reading for Eli's sake. I might not have been two feet planted in this book, but I did want him to be happy. (Also don't know why it says read twice. It was only the one time)

The female lead (already forgot her name) was a bit unbearable and boring but I loved Eli and his warmth.

This was my least favorite of Ali’s books. The characters were just not…good?
