Not Hungry (YA Verse)

June is fat. June also has an eating disorder, but no one sees. When she doesn't eat, her friends and family think they see a fat girl on a diet, not someone starving herself. When June's secret is found out by Toby, the new boy next door, she is panicked. Then she learns he also has a secret. Everyone has their own little lies.

Book TWs: ED, fat-phobia, fat-shaming
(I'll likely edit this review later)
Finally. Something that doesn't glamorize and glorify mental disorders. That's a first! /hj
I would like the start out the review by saying this book was great. Despite the lower rating, I enjoyed the book. And even though I didn't find it to be the best, there's a chance you might! Anyways, I absolutely adored the writing style (and am definitely taking recs for more books written in verse) and the characters were all pretty fleshed out considering how short the book was. Also, the book actually brings awareness to the signs of anorexia nervosa rather than glorifying it like most media does. It also does its part to show that no one is ever too sick to get the help they need. And to top it off, powerful, realistic women (Mae) doing absolute girlboss things (being awesome.)
Speaking of the characters, they all pissed me off. Toby and Erick especially, but I know they were meant to piss people off. Mae, June, and Lacey were all fairly cool, though.
The plot was good, I just wish there would've been more. It seemed too fast-paced, like if the ending didn't happen ASAP the book would be nothing. The premise was great, but the execution was poor if I'm being honest. The plot was supposed to be about June's ED and Toby's secret, but both are hardly mentioned and focus is placed on other things (like Erick and Mae.)
Despite my gloomy review, I did actually end up enjoying this book. It was a quick, easy read, and I can see myself recommending it to my friends. I only give it a 7 becaused certain things annoyed me (the lack of plot focus) and I feel some parts of it could've been overall better. All in all, check it out if you're in the market for something that takes roughly an hour to read and can actually bring awareness to issues.
P.S.
If you or someone you know is struggling with an ED or other mental disorder, don't hesitate to reach out and talk to someone. There are online resources if you're unable to get professional help. And remember, it's never too late to get help. ❤
