This book was just “ok” for me. The first half vs the second half were like two totally different books. The first half was slow and told pretty much in Darby’s POV then the second half really picked up speed and had some gore (not a ton but enough to be grossed out).
This book just had me ranting to my husband. He had no clue what was going on but I kept telling him about all the stupid decisions that Darby was making. Honestly, if she would’ve asked Jay one simple question it would’ve cleared up a major issue she had.
I didn’t find the reveals to be shocking and I had been screaming at the book when Darby made that last big mistake with the phone.

It’s Dec 23rd and Darby, a CO university student, is heading home to her mother and sister in UT, when she is forced to take refuge at a rest stop, along with a few other drivers, because the roads have been closed down from the blizzard snowstorm. While walking around the parking lot of the rest stop (trying to get a phone signal), she sees a child’s hand from the back window of a van. During the night, she discovers an injured and naked female child (Jaybird) in a dog cage, in the back of the van, who was abducted in San Diego.
Through process of elimination and a foiled escape attempt, Darby discovers who the abductors are and the rest of the story revolves around either killing the abductors before they kill her or staying alive long enough to rescue and escape with Jaybird. There is also the possibility of staying alive until morning when the rest stop crew comes in and can alert the police. However, that is hours away and looking less and less likely.
While I do enjoy a really good, action-packed, page-turning thriller, this got to be a bit much after a while. It reminded me of one of those slasher stories where the high school/college aged MC's run around for most of the story barely escaping the killer and no matter what they do to the killer, HE NEVER DIES. Not even blowing up the bldg he was in. UUUGGGHHH!!! Was REALLY glad when I finally got to the end; I’d had enough of this story. The only thing that kept me going was finding out what happened to Jaybird.
