Hairpin Bridge: A Novel

From the author of the “full-throttle thriller” (A. J. Finn) No Exit—a riveting new psychological page-turner featuring a fierce and unforgettable heroine.

Three months ago, Lena Nguyen’s estranged twin sister, Cambry, drove to a remote bridge seventy miles outside of Missoula, Montana, and jumped two hundred feet to her death. At least, that is the official police version.

But Lena isn’t buying it.

Now she’s come to that very bridge, driving her dead twin’s car and armed with a cassette recorder, determined to find out what really happened by interviewing the highway patrolman who allegedly discovered her sister’s body.

Corporal Raymond Raycevic has agreed to meet Lena at the scene. He is sympathetic, forthright, and professional. But his story still seems a bit off. For one thing, he stopped Cambry for speeding just an hour before she supposedly leaped to her death. Then there are the sixteen attempted 911 calls from her cell phone, made in what was unfortunately a dead zone.

But perhaps most troubling of all, the state trooper is referred to by name in Cambry’s final enigmatic text to her sister: Please Forgive Me. Lena will do anything to uncover the truth. But as her twin’s final hours come into focus, Lena’s search turns into a harrowing tooth-and-nail fight for her own survival—one that will test everything she thought she knew about her sister and herself...

"Hairpin Bridge" by Taylor Adams is a fast-paced and thrilling mystery novel that explores the dark underbelly of a small town in Montana. While the book is well-written and engaging, it falls short in terms of character development and originality. One of the strengths of the book is the author's ability to create a tense and suspenseful atmosphere that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The plot is well-crafted, with plenty of twists and turns that keep the mystery alive until the very end. The descriptions of the small town and its inhabitants are vivid and atmospheric, adding to the overall feeling of unease. However, the characters in the book are somewhat underdeveloped, with little backstory or depth to their personalities. The protagonist, Emily, is a strong-willed and determined woman, but her motivations and actions are often difficult to understand. The other characters in the story, including Emily's ex-boyfriend and the town sheriff, are also somewhat one-dimensional, with little to distinguish them from other stock characters in the mystery genre. Furthermore, the plot of the book is somewhat derivative, borrowing heavily from other mystery and thriller novels. While the twists and turns of the story are well-executed, they feel somewhat predictable and lack the originality needed to truly make the book stand out. Overall, "Hairpin Bridge" is a well-written and suspenseful mystery novel, but its shortcomings in terms of character development and originality make it a somewhat formulaic read. Fans of the genre may still find it enjoyable, but those looking for a truly standout mystery novel may be disappointed.
