Beautiful Fantasy Elements
I really loved how this story utilized its unique fantasy elements. Not only that, but it built them into the unique worlds and societies in this story with ease. It made it really fun to read about the world and the particulars of the fantasy elements. In fact, I would have preferred more fantasy.
Wasted Dual POV
While I have been an advocate for dual povs in the past, I was not a big fan of the dual pov in this story because I didnât feel that Tarikâs POV offered anything to the story. His POV felt more like something that was added in after the fact. This disappointed me because having POVs on either side of a romantic relationship could have been really dramatic, but this fell flat.
Grand Build-Up
In my opinion, there was too much build up in this story. I think this had to do with the dual POVs in this story because the build up for each character was good, but when combined, it equaled nearly a quarter of the book. That is too long, in my opinion, especially when the intro lacked tension.
Constant Back Story
Iâm not sure why, but I was really annoyed with the constant back story being dropped in this book. Maybe it had to do with the fact that there was so much intro that it should have all been covered already, but when there was back story still being dropped in the last quarter of the book, I found myself a little frustrated. It also kept throwing me off because it would shift between past tense and present tense to do this and my brain doesnât handle switches that easily anymore. :/
