My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir

Provocative, inspiring, and unflinchingly honest, My Grandfather's Son is the story of one of America's most remarkable and controversial leaders, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, told in his own words.

Thomas speaks out, revealing the pieces of his life he holds dear, detailing the suffering and injustices he has overcome, including the polarizing Senate hearing involving a former aide, Anita Hill, and the depression and despair it created in his own life and the lives of those closest to him. In this candid and deeply moving memoir, a quintessential American tale of hardship and grit, Clarence Thomas recounts his astonishing journey for the first time.

All I knew about the man was that he was from a small town in Georgia, named Pinpoint. I didn’t even know where it was. Come to find out that Pinpoint is an island city just outside of Savannah, where he was raised. His mother never married his “biological” father, whom he only saw twice in his life. His mother’s parents, whom he called “Daddy” and “Aunt Tina” raised him and his brother (hence the name daddy, rather than grandpa). His grandfather instilled in both of them a terrific work ethic, and an undying respect for others, no matter the color of their skin or station in life. I was expecting a very dry read with nothing but facts and figures. What I got was so much more. It was filled with stories of friends and family who helped him on his journey to where he is now. It also included his feelings about the NAACP, desegregation, Malcolm X, and busing. His hard work, combined with people he met along the way, equalled the “luck” he had dropped into his lap, at every turn in his life. I give this book five thumbs up.
