Murder Road
A young couple find themselves haunted by a string of gruesome murders committed along an old deserted road in this terrifying new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Cold Cases. July 1995. April and Eddie have taken a wrong turn. They're looking for the small resort town where they plan to spend their honeymoon. When they spot what appears to a lone hitchhiker along the deserted road, they stop to help. But not long after the hitchiker gets into their car, they see the blood seeping from her jacket and a truck barreling down Atticus Line after them. When the hitchhiker dies at the local hospital, April and Eddie find themselves in the crosshairs of the Coldlake Falls police. Unexplained murders have been happening along Atticus Line for years and the cops finally have two witnesses who easily become their only suspects. As April and Eddie start to dig into the history of the town and that horrible stretch of road to clear their names, they soon learn that there is something supernatural at work, something that could not only tear the town and its dark secrets apart, but take April and Eddie down with it all.

It started off interesting. Then it wasn't as much. I can't say that I fully understand or excuse the misogyny and the undertones of the racism, considering Robbie was the only character of color in the story as a major factor. Even the character, Trish was the only other person of color and she was not even a secondary character in the story. I also found it irritating because of Eddie and his stereotypical military characteristics and the stigma that is put on soldiers often who have been deployed. I feel like if this book was written and produced in the late 90s rather than set in the 90s I would give them more grace, but since that's not the case struggle to get through this book , my interest in the story as it progressed.
After reading and loving THE BOOK OF COLD CASES a couple years ago, as soon as I saw a new title by Simone St. James, it went right to the top of my list of anticipated reads.
Thank goodness I was patient enough to wait on my library hold to come through because I would've been really disappointed if I'd spent money on this one.
I loved the premise - and since I'd enjoyed the paranormal elements in THE BOOK OF COLD CASES, I was sure I was in for a good time here.
The main characters were flat and uninteresting. The more I read, the more I got pissed off at the constant hints that April and Eddie each had a mysterious past, there were secrets being kept, and/or they hadn't really known each other that long. If there had been just a mention or two, I feel that would have accomplished a little suspense and anticipation.
The paranormal aspect was anything BUT spooky and spine-tingly. It was underdeveloped and seemed more of a band-aid to bridge gaps in the plot than anything else. I can't even call it predictable because the predictable route would have actually been a little bit better of an ending, IMO.
Why didn't I DNF? I honestly thought the author would pull off something amazing - that it had just gotten off to a bit of a rocky start. By the time I was starting to accept that wouldn't be happening, I was sort of entranced by the train wreck. I needed to finish just to see if it was going to stay mediocre or downgrade to just plain bad.
I personally would not recommend this one - but of course, these are my opinions and my reading experience. If something about this book caught your fancy - absolutely give it a whirl, just grab it from your library.

I know the reviews for this one is mixed. This author always has some paranormal running around, but I really enjoyed this one the most! The book was really well written, suspenseful right away, and I just couldn't wait to hear the ending. Completely unexpected ending! I really enjoyed this book and this is my third book from this author!
Read this in 2 days ... Absolutely loved it. First book by this author and I can't wait to read more of her books. Loved the eeriness of it. The supernatural/paranormal stuff. Loved the small town vibes. Loved the sisters. If you like that type of book, read this one! It's a must!
