This is a quick, but satisfying read from Delta James, it is the second book in a series but can totally be read as a standalone.
As wildlife biologist, Dr Neve Dalton, stares at her computer screen, she can't believe what she is seeing, instead of her pack of wolves, there were terrified women, hands tied, being manhandled into a plane by a bunch of armed men.
Neve had secured a grant to follow and record the pack behaviour and the migration of a wolf pack in the wilds of Alaska, a grant that she looked like losing, the human traffickers were well trained, well connected, they knew what she had and would kill her to get it. Armed men were approaching her research cabin, Neve had to run taking the incriminating SD card with her, she ran for her life in the freezing cold, through unforgiving , overgrown forests and brambles, she ignored the cuts and bruises, her lungs were screaming, she was exhausted, she was being shot at, there was no escape until suddenly.......
Ex military operator turned rogue smuggler, Magnus, had started the engine of his small Cessna, he was heading out of the small secluded clearing when he saw a terrified looking, battered woman running toward his plane, he wasn't going to stop but she wasn't going to give up, people were shooting at her as she hung on to his door, a door that against his better judgement he opened.
This story follows the journey of Neve and Marcus as they fight the Alaskan storms and well trained mercenaries to keep Neve alive and to deliver her incriminating evidence to the appropriate authorities, to someone who could save these women.
The journey was hard, they fight wild terrain, freezing cold and bullets along the way, they discover a combustible chemistry, a chemistry that is palpable, but can Neve give up the life that she knows to live on the wrong side of the law for the sake of love?
