I started this book thinking that the author was a woman, as most urban fantasy of this sort is written by women. But I had my doubts throughout, particularly given the way Samantha described men. She seemed to describe them (and to be attracted to aspects of them) in a way that sounded like the way a man might want a woman to be, not the way most women actually are. So I wasn't that surprised to discover, just now, that the author is a man.
I enjoyed the story well enough to finish listening to the first book, but it was way too short to cost the same as a full length book and lacked the kind of depth, complexity, and mystery that would make me want to continue reading the series. The cover also looks like it was made by a beginner fiddling with a graphics program, which makes me wonder whether the book went through much scrutiny by a reputable publisher. Certainly it didn't undergo enough scrutiny by an editor, as the author clearly needs to review a few books on the basics of good writing. I can forgive that sort of thing in favor of a really good story, but this wasn't quite good enough to make me want to keep reading the series.
