The suspense is bone-chilling when you realize the monsters are real . . .

Miles away from the hectic city, Reed and Rebecca hike into the beautiful Northwester woods. They are surrounded by gorgeous mountains, waterfalls, and hundreds of acres of unspoiled wilderness.

During their first night camping, an unearthly wail pierces the calm of the forest. Then something emerges from the dense woods. Everything that follows is a blur to Reed--except the unforgettable image of a huge creature carrying his wife into the darkness.

Enter into deep wilderness where the rules of civilization no longer apply. A world where strange shadows lurk. Where creatures long attributed to overactive imaginations and nightmares are the hunters . . . and people are the hunted.

I got this book for $2.50 at a library sale, and read it in two evenings on my Disney vacation. That is the appropriate cost in time and money to put into this book. It seems like Peretti wanted to try to write a Michael Crichton novel, but his skill just isn't there. I think he tried to write this from a pro-creationism, anti-evolutionary viewpoint, but he failed in that. The ending of the book was clear by the time I was half way through it. The best fun I had from this was re-telling it to my husband as we walked through Epcot - and on the re-telling, it just seemed more ridiculous than it did when I read it. Still, a fine vacation read, and one you can happily leave wherever you are for someone else to enjoy.
