It’s Christmas in July on Madras Island and Alex thinks her biggest concerns are getting her gift made and keeping the peace between Kibbles and Bruno. That is until the grove of hybrid mistletoe is cleared and the Mimi’s unpublished research is stolen. Suspicion falls on the lab’s interns and every move is scrutinized. With time running out before the ship returns, a cunning trap is laid to catch the culprit and save Mimi’s career. Mistletoe, Mutts, & Muffins is a short, cozy side case to Kathryn Mykel’s quilting mystery series. The island is so well described that you feel as if you’re there with Alex, Hawk, Henrietta, & Mimi. Kibbles is darling as the security chief chihuahua and golden mix Bruno is lovable and chaotic. The closed circle aspect of the mystery keeps the suspect pool limited and each seems equally likely of being the perpetrator. While the mystery itself is solved, there are dangling threads to being a larger mystery at play behind the scenes. Prior knowledge of the series is helpful but not necessary to enjoy this case. I received a free advanced reading copy from the author, and this is my voluntary review.
