I was so excited when I heard the 6th book to the Lady Sherlock was out. I secured a copy and read it with great relish. Unfortunately, my attention started to wane as it took the very last third of the novel to really gain my interest. We finally get to the designated The Garden of Hermopolis which is where a group of occultists in Cornwall, in which Moriartyâs daughter is residing. The question is, is she still staying there freely or against her will? Moriartyâs agent reportedly has not seen his daughter in quite a while but yet, hears her voice speaking to her. It is at the final third of the novel where all the players come to the fold and have me on edge. The ending was really good but was it worth reading 2/3s of âOMG, are we there yet?â battle cries?
I am happy to say, I truly see Charlotte is able to connect with her emotions more. It was absolutely delightful, to read the outrageous flirting and the next level of the relationship Charlotte and Lord Ingram are finally able to have. That said, Livia and Mr. Marbleton always captivated my attention and was very pleased to read she is once again, proving useful as she draws on her recollection of their previous conversations to help decipher clues left by someone to solve. However, their roles should be brought out more so in the forefront. They give it more heart, as well as Charlotte and Lord Ingramâs relationship.
Now back to the question, can the ending justify the long and drawn-out beginning? Sadly, the beginning â of the book seemed a bit much to lay out the ground and it became too excruciating. For me to say, âOMG, are we there yet?â is not something an author wants to hear so, I have to give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Is this read going to be the bridge for the rest of her series, as The Order of the Phoenix was to the Harry Potter series? The game is afoot! Perhaps after I read book 7, I will reflect and see why book 6 was so important to the series. I will have my library card poised and ready as I patiently wait and see.
