Misery: A Novel

The #1 New York Times bestselling tale of terror from master storyteller Stephen King about a famous novelist held hostage in a remote location by his “number one fan”.

Bestselling novelist Paul Sheldon thinks he’s finally free of Misery Chastain. In a controversial career move, he’s just killed off the popular protagonist of his beloved romance series in favor of expanding his creative horizons. But such a change doesn’t come without consequences. After a near-fatal car accident in rural Colorado leaves his body broken, Paul finds himself at the mercy of the terrifying rescuer who’s nursing him back to health—his self-proclaimed number one fan, Annie Wilkes. Annie is very upset over what Paul did to Misery and demands that he find a way to bring her back by writing a new novel—his best yet, and one that’s all for her. After all, Paul has all the time in the world to do so as a prisoner in her isolated house...and Annie has some very persuasive and violent methods to get exactly what she wants...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tense, Unrelenting, and Absolutely Impossible to Put Down Misery is pure psychological horror at its finest—claustrophobic, nerve-wracking, and so intense that I was on edge the entire time. Stephen King doesn’t just create suspense; he traps you inside it, making every moment feel more suffocating than the last. Paul Sheldon’s situation is horrifyingly simple—one room, one captor, and no escape. But what makes this book so gripping is Annie Wilkes. She’s not just a villain; she’s unpredictable, terrifying, and disturbingly real. Her mood swings are chilling, shifting from overly sweet to pure rage in an instant, and that sense of never knowing what’s coming next made every scene unbearably tense. The writing is razor-sharp, and the pacing is relentless. There’s no room to breathe—every chapter tightens the noose, every small victory feels fleeting, and every moment of hope is immediately crushed under the weight of Annie’s control. Even when things slow down, there’s a creeping dread in the background that never really lets up. If I had one complaint, it would be that some sections felt a little drawn out, but honestly? That almost added to the tension, stretching out the unease and making the moments of horror hit even harder. This book is brutal, gripping, and deeply unsettling in the best way. King takes a simple premise and turns it into a nightmare you can’t look away from.

Oh Stephen King..... Taking a story where not much actually happens and keeping me engaged and foaming at the mouth to continue to read. This is what great writing and storytelling is. Also a shout out to the poor rat, you will be remembered.
