Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit

Now a Netflix original series

Discover the classic, behind-the-scenes chronicle of John E. Douglas’ twenty-five-year career in the FBI Investigative Support Unit, where he used psychological profiling to delve into the minds of the country’s most notorious serial killers and criminals.

In chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases—and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.

During his twenty-five year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life.

As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

The book talked about some very interesting cases including ones that were new to me or I had heard about on other podcasts. So it was interesting to hear the profile and how they got there. But the author bragged about himself a lot… which made the book less credible. The way he humble brags is a bit off putting. But would definitely recommend to true crime lovers as long as you can look past the bragging!

The author recounts some of his most gruesome and challenging cases sduring his twenty-five-year career with the FBI. It is interesting, but not a unique take on anything.

John E Douglas writes what he has been through, witnessed and overcome!
Meeting Serial Killers, offenders, serial rapists/molesters and the down right insane.

John Douglas talks about his life as an FBI profiler at Quantaco and his journey of what his job takes him on such as his home life and physical health; he also talks about road school, and how he helps people learn about Serial Killers and their ways. This was such an interesting book to read, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves true crime. The accounts he gave, the people he has spoken too and the way he tells his stories of the encounters he has had.

John also speaks about talking to some of the most prolific Killers such as: Ed Kemper, Richard Speck, Charles Manson, Jerry Brudos and Monte Rissell, David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) and many more. John talks about how he gets the Killers to talk, how he gets then to open up, how he gets information from them.

There is also a dedicated chapter about the infamous Atlanta Child Murders.

Some of the parts of the book when he spoke about specific serial Killers and what they had done my exact words were "What the actual F*ck have I just read", people do the most horrific things.

This was a really great, informative book for the true crime junkie. As a criminal justice major in college, I found the book to have a lot of great information on profiling and I think it was amazing to read to stories we have heard in the media told from the perspective of someone who lived it.
