Milkman: A Novel

Winner of the 2018 Man Booker Prize, Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences. In a time when the wrong flag, wrong religion, or even a sunset can be subversive. Told with ferocious energy and sly, wicked humor, Milkman establishes Anna Burns as one of the most consequential voices of our day.

Unreadable dreck, but I read it anyway. Because it's a book club book. And guess who picked it??

Could hear the Northern Irish way of recounting through the narrative. Being from Ireland and knowing Northern Irish people, this brought me joy as well as an element of frustration while reading - wanting the author to get on with it ;) but that really is part of the Northern Irish experience. Appreciated the story also as an insight to how the troubles in the 70s affected the everyday existence and experience of a teenager during that time. I feel I have a greater empathy for anyone living through that paranoid time and can better understand why even today the people there have not been able to move as far along with reconciliation as a general idea as I had hoped and wished for.

Depressing. Stream of consciousness writing. Hated it.
