Managed Care

"Funniest book I've ever read." -Tom McCaffrey, bestselling author of The Wise Ass

Is it too much to ask that a managed care facility refund a year's advance payment when your grandfather dies before he can move in?

Frank Johnson doesn't think so, which is why the thirty-three-year-old now lives in a nursing home, locked in a chess match feud with management that doesn't occupy nearly enough of his time.

When foster kid Elroy is thrust into his life, Frank decides to turn this forced relationship to his advantage - launching a string of absurd decisions, inappropriate behaviors and unexpected glimpses of tenderness that ultimately turn a New Jersey suburb upside down. A laugh-out-loud celebration of bad choices for good causes, Managed Care is an offbeat story about three misfits on the social fringes of suburbia and their ridiculous campaign to introduce an unfiltered version of intimacy to their stale, impersonal community. Because, according to Frank, it's probably what Jesus would have wanted.

Didn’t care for it…started out humorous then just got weird. Seems like the author picked every controversial subject in today’s society to toss in the book. That would have been find but the ending was so anti religious it was offensive!

This book is one that I felt guilty enjoying. It is a book of very dark humor. The main characters are not likable yet you like and root for them. I felt the same way when watching Dexter. Not that any one of these characters are a serial killer or anything close to that but you almost feel dirty laughing or cheering for any of these characters or the outcome of this story. I told my sister I had no idea where this story was going and why I was enjoying it. All I can say is this book was one of my book clubs’ picks, I am surprised by this and can’t wait to discuss it. I will say that I am surprised by the book cover chosen and feel it was a big mistake. It does not indicate what is inside and would never have made me pick up this book. Would love to know what they were thinking with that pick. I would recommend this book for a personal read to anyone who has a little bit of a dark sense of humor. Even though I am reading it for my book club I would not have thought to have recommended it for a book club read.
