Evie lives a blessed existence, she has the best friends, financial security and social standing. But it is Regency England and her place in the world is to not think and marry well. Unfortunately he brother returns from India with political ambitions which means Evie must act as his feather-brained ambassador with any man who can offer political cache for Victor. In this duty Evie encounters society's most notorious rake, St. Aubyn, as he fawns over the wife of Lord Gladstone. Her angelic innocence intrigues Saint. But she knows better than to even speak to the rake. But her brother's directive to enlist the Gladstone's attention puts her in his path. Once again Evie feels that she is nothing more than a pretty face and she wants to make a difference in the world. As she passes an orphanage Evie has an epiphany, this is where she can make a difference. The issue, Saint is the on the Board and is determined to scare her into leaving his burden of an orphanage.
The conflict in the romance is well defined and strong. The characters have clear motivations. The sexual tension between the characters is enticing without being ridiculous. There is a spice, not overly graphic, but very satisfying. Evie is a smart, if eager protagonist and Saint is a fun Alpha male that has a believable transformation. This book scratches my Regency romance itch. It hits all my buttons without too much suspension of disbelief. There is a kidnapping that stretches the believability, but it is motivated to further the story and the character's arc.
One of my favorite Regency Romances that I return to read over and over.
