Growing up in a family of 4 girls I identified with the differences in personality of 4 sisters. A charming tale of the past.
As a young girl, I wish this book had been introduced to me as I was growing up. Instead, I first read this as a twenty-year-old, with a deep love of girlhood and the complexities of growing up. Stupidly, I assumed the book was just a basic love triangle between two sisters and their neighbour, while their other sister dies.
How wrong I was.
To read a book about four female characters learning to grow up and navigate the unfamiliar world and situations around them, was an incredible experience. Despite how different each character is, there is part of them that I can find myself in, from Jo's stubborn nature, to Meg's desire to have a family, each character has something to offer to a modern world. The theme of romantic love is not a major plot point and instead is not truly mentioned until later on in the novel, instead choosing to focus of sisterly love. The characters are organic, and this book truly is a timeless classic.
This is a classic for a reason!
Even though this isn't the type of genre I usually enjoy, I had such a wonderful time reading this. The "little women" all have a way to capture your heart, make you laugh when they laugh, cry when they cry, and smile at their innocence and youthfulness.
Jo was by far my favourite character, and I wish the book could have gone on longer to see what the author had planned for her future.
Alcott is a wonderful writer, and made the whole story flow naturally together. Even though I wish the story could have gone on, it ended beautifully and in a perfect picture.
I think this book is honestly an incredible version of women’s lives during the war. I think the only reason I give it 3 stars is down to the fact I am not best suited to this writing and lean more towards other books of similar concepts.
